Heal and protect during the cold and flu season

Essential Oils are nature's gift to us for healing

If you ever ate a peppermint patty after dinner, you know the cooling effects mint has on the digestive tract and the way it opens the sinus passages. Mint is also soothing for headaches and migrane. These are just some simple ways we understand the benefits of essential oils in our daily lives. When you were sick as a child, perhaps you remember having Vicks rubbed on your back. The menthol in Vicks comes from the Eucalyptus tree native to Australia. Eucalyptus has several benefits for the respiratory tract and thus is used extensively in aromatherapy formulas.

Essential oils can be used throughout our day for just about everything, from cleansing skin to cleaning countertops. They were at one time the only way to "cure" ailments.

In ancient times, essential oils were the primary medical intervention used to combat infections. Since the dawn of pharmacopeia, these practices have faded away but more recently they are on the rise as people begin to take back power over their own health care, especially in the rising climate of drug prices and un-affordable healthcare.

If you are unaware of the true healing power of essential oils, realize that they go beyond just “smelling good.” The chemical constituent of essential oils, what gives them their fragrance, are the healing properties inherent in the plant. They are the lifeblood of the plant and its immune system. These components serve to protect the plant from disease, predators and changing climate. Some plants are more anti-bacterial in composition while others are anti-fungal or anti-parasitic, but all plants are antiseptic. The effectiveness of the plant’s defenses can be determined by the growing conditions ( elevation of where it is planted), weather conditions (dry, wet, humid, cold, hot etc) and farming practices (use of pesticides or fertilizers).

Modern medicine has grown away from using these natural ingredients because the instability in climate and growth habits of the plants makes it difficult to standardize the oil for use by a large population. Medicine must have a predictable outcome to be able to prescribe it to patients, especially when malpractice insurance is on the line. The volatility of essential oils is just too risky for doctors to prescribe. However, modern medicine has taken these effective compounds in essential oils and re-created them in the lab to create a synthetic version that they can standardize. So when you are taking a drug, you are essentially taking in an altered form mother nature has given us on this earth. *Essential oils are complex in structure and act efficiently against drug resistant microbes because of high volatility at a very low temperature and quick spread in the environment and in the body.1

So why not just use the real plants? One answer is that plants can still cause allergic reactions in some people. Another answer is for convenience. The concentrations of chemical compounds are less in one dose of essential oil than in the synthetic counterparts so that means you must apply the essential oil more frequently to get the desired result, and many people just don’t want to smell like the oil all day (especially the strongest antibiotic Oregano!) But, because plants are organic (contain carbon atoms), they are easily accepted and assimilated by human body. So, these oils work fast and give relief. When a plant is considered anti-bacterial, that means it can be used to fight off bacterial infections in the body. Some may be taken internally (like culinary herbs) while others are best inhaled (in the case of sinus and bronchial infections) while others should only be diluted when applying to the skin. As the skin is the first level of protection from disease, applying the oils in a moisturizer or body oil will help prevent the spread of disease killing the pathogen on contact.*

Essential oils work by inhalation because they are readily absorbed into the bloodstream by inhalation.  By topical application, they are also absorbed into the bloodstream because they penetrate the skin to the first layer. It is because of their potency that caution should always be taken when using pure essential oils.  Essential  oils

Here's some helpful tips for fighting the common cold the natural way. (When prevention is no longer an option)

1. As stated earlier, Hot water with Cinnamon and Honey for a cough or Hot water and Lemon for extra mucous or Hot water with a garlic clove or ginger root steeped creates a natural antibiotic. Sip any of these daily.
2. Take mega doses of Vitamin C  (I like Emergen-C)
3. Take B vitamins, Zinc, Selenium and Calcium/Magnesium with Vitamin D
4. Eat almonds, walnuts, berries, pomegranate seeds, green leafy veggetables, whole grains, broth, olive oil and lots of Garlic!
5. Get lots of SLEEP! The body needs sleep to rejuvenate. Resting in front of the TV is not enough. Sleep shuts your brain down from the Sympathetic Nervous System to the Parasympathetic to restore and rejuvenate damaged cells.

Using essential oils for Common Cold, Bronchitis and Flu Symptoms:
- Rub 25-50 drops of Cold & Flu or Vir-Away! essential oil on your back 1-2x day ( is great for the muscle aches that come from being sick)
- Rub 2-5 drops of Cold & Flu or Vir-Away! essential on the bottom of the feet up to 5x/day
- Take a bath in Cold & Flu or Vir-Away with sea salts once/day until well (detoxifies the pathogens from the body, relieves muscle soreness and can induce a mild fever to fight the infection)
- Place a drop of any of the formulas on a tissue and inhale for up to 15 min
- Rub any of the formulas on the chest to open breathing passages
- Diffuse and Inhale any of the formulas deeply for 5-10 min to loosen and expel mucous.

As you go along trying these methods, please feel free to reach out with questions or concerns or post a review if you find our suggestions to be helpful. Thanks for reading and many blessings for good health in this serious flu season.
